Hineihaea is a trained secondary Māori language teacher, with more than 30 years’ experience in the Māori language and Māori sectors. She is also an experienced researcher, evaluator, and advisor in Māori education, with a particular interest in Māori-medium education. She has developed and facilitated several teacher education in-service programmes on curriculum, second language pedagogy, and assessment.
Hineihaea has managed several national Māori language and education projects, including overseeing the Te Reo Māori and Te Reo Pākehā learning areas within Te Marautanga o Aotearoa for the Ministry of Education, leading the development of the Whakamātauria Tō Reo Māori (Language Proficiency Examination system) for Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori, and contributing to the creation of Tātaiako: cultural competencies for teachers of Māori learners for the Teaching Council (then NZ Teachers Council) and the Ministry of Education.
Additionally, Hineihaea has worked with many organizations to develop their Te Reo and Te Ao Māori strategies and frameworks, including The Office of the Auditor General and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
